FFL requirements for an engraver
does anybody know if a ffl is required if you are engraving firearms

The long and short answer is YES.
Any time you have a "firearm" overnight in your possesion for "repair" which also includes engraving you need a FFL.
There are many parts of a gun that can be engraved without one but for them most part the receiver is required to have a FFL.
You can engrave your own firearms without one but any others require a FFL.

Jon, first check local zoning and make sure you can have a business in whatever location you are planning to use. Most engravers work at home but are in an area where cottage industry (small business) is allowed. If that checks out then contact the BATF. You should be able to find them in a phone book under gov offices or such. You will also need a state tax license if your area has sales taxes.
