Engraved Colt Dragoon |
I just bought a 2nd issure Colt Dragoon that has the L. D. Nimschke style engraging on it as show in the book. Serial number is 247XX and it has very well fitted walnut grips on it and looks to be silver plated. The engraving is very well done and looks to be hand engraved.
It came with a white stayaform Colt Box but no other case. It does not have the gold cyclinder, ramrod or other parts plated with gold or ivoey grips.
Would it possible to find out who the engraver was and more about this gun. It does have all the engraving as show on the limited run of fifty with Nimschkes name on the left side as show in the book.
Any help of this gun would be nice and what the valuse may be.

Hello Ivan,
Thank you for posting some information about your Dragoon pistol.
It may be very difficult to answer your questions without seeing the gun or some good photographs.
Have you examined it in detail to look for an engravers mark?
Not all engraved guns are marked but some are marked in hidden places such as in the detail of a leaf or even under the grips. If you could find and describe the mark that would be a good starting point.
I expect someone can give you more ideas.
Best regards.
John.

Ivan,
I believe that all of those "Nimschke" dragoons were done through a company associated with Larry Wilson who had most of his engraving done by Alvin White and Andrew Bourbon.
By the way, are you the same Texas Man who posts all of those interesting biographical stories on the SASS Wire Forum.

Thank You for Your reply and information. I know the work is done by a real master engraver as it is super well done.
Yes I am the same Texas Man at SASS. I will have a story about an Old Confederate Vet. that I had the chance to meet in person a long time ago about 1947-49 and He told Me in person about his experence as a Drummer Boy at the age of 12. The story will come out in the near future in the Cowboy Chronicle. Its an interesting story and I wanted to share it.
I have a Orginal engraved Henry that I am trying to find out who the engraver may have been and there may be some pictures of it coming out in the next issure of the Texas Gun Collector Mag. One sold at Rock Island Auction a while back that had the almost same engraving on it.

Ivan,
Regarding your Henry rifle, most of the Henry's that the factory commissioned the engraving on were engraved by Samuel Hoggson. They are all quite similar however others have copied his work. Hoggson was not a "factory engraver" per se as there was no in house engraver at the Henry factory because they did not have many guns engraved. Many Henrys were also engraved by all sorts of people from soldiers with a sharp nail to the most famous 19th century engraver, Louis D. Nimschke.
If you will post pictures of your Henry, I and others here will do our best to tell you more about the engraving.
By the way, I don't go on the SASS wire much anymore after one person compared "clothing zealots" to child molestors, I lost all interest in the wire.
