Engraving a nickel plated gun?

Hello,

I am going to be engraving a nickel plated gun, I am wondering what the process should be. Should I have the nickel removed from the gun, then engrave the gun, then have the nickel plated put back on? HELP, I'm not sure. would love for someone to give me some information.

Thanks

Scott

Scott, the nickel will need to be removed before engraving, otherwise it will chip and make a mess. Polishing works but is hard to do and all the little nooks and cranies can't be done completely. Try to find a plating business that can chemically deplate the gun. Make sure they can do it without eating away any of the steel. Then you can refinish any method you choose, including replating. Oh, and be sure to let the owner know of the added expense of deplating/replating. S
