Does the bluing have to be removed from a gun to engrave? or can you engrave it over the bluing. I understand it would be easier to have a clean gun to draw on. But if I can get a outline without removing it why not.

Al, plenty of guns have been engraved "thru the blue" but that is not the preferred method. Left that way the cuts are subject to rust more than normal. Also, one will want to polish the metal before engraving to smooth the surface and make the engraving look better. You will be surprised at how rough the metal surface is when the blue is removed. I don't recommend cutting through the blue.
