I am learning draw engraving designs so as to help me with my scrimshaw. I hope that this leads to gun engraving. Can anyone please help me on how to do a pattern for ribbon/interlocking letters. I love this old style and would love to learn it. I cannot find the book, A practical course in jewelry engraving by Albert Winter that helps on this subject. I would like to buy a copy from anyone. I have enjoyed all the pictures you folks have posted. You all do such FINE!! work. Thank you!

Hi Gary .. welcome to our forum . I would suggest looking at James B. Meeks book of engraving he does show some lettering how too . and I am sure there is some one in the guild that knows what you need .. ron

Gary, If you can obtain a copy of "The International Cyclopedia of Monograms", I'm sure it will help you any style of lettering. The ISBN # is 0-921335-86-5 Mine is a reprint of the 1910 version and comes from Canada. I beleive it is available from Amazon and maybe other sources as well.

Try the local library...if they do not have on hand they can order it for you from another library...

then scan it...its not a very large number of pages...and as far as I know it is not illegal to copy as long as you do not sell it..as old as it is may be public domain...you would need to check with someone..

you might also try Barnes and nobel in their used and antique section on line...I found a copy there last year....

The best book for ribbon letters that I know of - other than those shown - is The Jewelry Engravers Manual by R. Allen Hady and John J. Bowman. It is fully illustrated and shows you exactly how to do what you are wanting to do. The ISBN number is 0-486-28154-X. You will REALLY learn a lot from it. Don Tate
