BACK GROUND BLACK |
HAS ANY ONE FOUND A BLACK BACK GROUND MATERIAL FOR RELIEF ENGRAVING THAT WILL NOT WASH OUT WITH CLEANING SOLVENT. I HAVE TRIED AUTOMOTIVE PAINT WITH A HARDENER, THAT WORKED WELL BUT DID NOT STICK 100%.

I have been using "Antique Background Black" from Ray Phillips at NgraveR and it seems to hold up pretty well. The nice part is you can always go back and redo it. I find that this is too stark and needs deeper lines so it works great with engraved scrolls but sometimes for very fine banknote cuts it doesn't work the best. For these I use oil based etching ink for print making and that works well as I can control it a bit. When dry it's pretty durable.

My preference is epoxy paint, very durable, and withstands most solvents. I have been using the Aluma-hyde in a spray can from Brownells, and cutting it with Xylene from Sherwin Williams

ed, i had a colt da i had engraved several yrs. back nickled by accurate weaponry in fl. he carded the polished finish off to give it a sattin finish after he hed filled the engr. lines & background with brass black , no less. it has held up for 12,13 yrs. i shoot it off & on. clean with copper solvent & varisol . no problem, black still hangin in. wether or not it would work on steel that way, i don,t know . give the guy a call with this. i believe he can be found on the net at accurate plating & weaponry or cogan custom guns. i hope this will help. john pilkington
