Hello Mark.
Glad to have you with us.
FEGA has a listing of many helpful books. Some to consider as well as your Meek's book are the great scroll design books by
Ron Smith. Well worth twice the price.
FEGA also has castings taken from some great engraving, These make WONDERFUL study models. They have a brochure and pricelist of them which is downloadable.
A school course is the very best of help to rearly get going. Check with FEGA for a list of instructors and schools.
Hope this is some help.

Hi Mark

Another great book to get is "the basics of firearms engraving" by Neil Hartliep. It's available from www.brownells.com type in "engraving" in their search box.
The book covers tool sharpening, engraving techniques, gold inlays etc.

The castings that John reccommends are worth their weight in gold. I have brought quite a few and study them all the time.

Ron Smiths books on scroll design are superb.

A good DVD to get is Sam Alfano's "Advanced Graver Sharpening" available from GRS.

Inspirational books are good as well. The British Gun Engraving Review is superb. European Gun Makers and Engravers is another. And don't forget the FEGA members profiles book available on this web site.

There's also some really good books recommended in the members only part of this web site.

Perhaps the most important tool you can use is pencil and paper. Draw as much as you can and as often as you can. Keep practicing as much as you can and it will start coming togeather for you. Like any skill it takes time to get the eye hand co-ordination thing happening. But it will happen.

Best regards
Andrew Biggs
